Mills & Boon is running their Love to Write competition in partnership with Love Island winner, Amber Rose Gill. This competition is in search of new voices based in the UK and Ireland from under-represented ethnic backgrounds to write romance for Mills & Boon!

Our aim is to increase racial diversity, inclusion and representation within the romance genre, so we're particularly interested in submissions from unpublished, unagented writers from under-represented ethnic backgrounds, including, but not limited to, Black, Asian, Middle Eastern, Latin American and Mixed-Race writers.

Full details of the competition can be found at our Love to Write website, but see below for the important details.

Key Elements:

  • Because we are offering a publishing contract, your story should fit within our UK series guidelines: Modern, Historical, Medical and True Love. More information about each of our series, and the key elements we are looking for can be found on the Love to Write guidelines page.
  • We are taking submissions from aspiring romance authors from 00:01 BST on the 9th July 2021 until 23:59 BST on the 4th October 2021.
  • Please submit your synopsis and the first 5,000 words via Submittable.
  • We also ask that you include an author statement, which includes a little bit about yourself, why increasing diversity and representation in romance is important to you and how you will bring greater diversity and representation to Mills & Boon with your submission.
  • The winner will receive a one-book contract with Mills & Boon worth £2,000 and a grant of £1,500 to support their writing. They will also receive a mentorship with an experienced Mills & Boon editor to help them develop their submission into a full, publishable romance novel.

Any questions?

We understand you may have some questions around your eligibility, what we’re looking for and how to enter, so we have created an FAQs page which covers the most common questions.

We use Submittable to accept and review our submissions.
